Can your gas meter measure correctly without periodical re-calibration? Can a calibration laboratory? Re-calibration of gas meters continues to be a discussion point in the natural gas industry. 

We have asked 5 industry professionals to share their opinion on the necessity of re-calibration. Here are their best arguments for re-calibration gas meters.

1. Re-calibration to avoid financial surprises

Re-calibration is preventive metrological maintenance. You do it because you want to avoid costly accidents.

2. Re-calibration ensures compliance with regulations

The primarily argument for re-calibration on Siri is compliance to government regulations, and terms and conditions in Tie Inn agreement with partners involved in the Siri field. Second, but not least, it is always an evaluation of what risk you as company are willing to take on a specific measurement. The risk can be attributed to the different topics. For example, safety, environment, cost or operational up time.

3. Re-calibration confirms accuracy and reduces uncertainty

The recalibration is to confirm that the meters are behaving well. We do this every 5th year. We are using these meters for both sales gas and allocating fuelgas. Some of them are used for reporting to the Norwegian Environment Agency concerning the emission of CO2. By calibrating on gas, we also reduce the uncertainty for the meters. When operating Coriolis meters on gas we are working on the lower operational area of the meters.

4. Re-calibration, diagnostics and big data analytics is the future

Metering should be based on fair trade between parties, where no party benefits financially from measurement errors at the expense of the other party. Re-calibration traditionally is the only way to know for sure if your meter has a systematic bias. For the future of metering, we foresee new methodologies, based on the combination of active diagnostics for meters and a big data analytics approach, which will complement the traditional periodically scheduled re-calibrations.

5. Re-calibration reduces risks

Re-calibration is necessary to reduce technical and financial risks. Technical - to check the general condition of the meter, of the transducers, etc. Financial – to ensure correct transfer of gas in the supply chain and avoid uncertainty. From a laboratory point of view, it is also interesting to look at the re-calibration intervals and how to apply historical calibration data of the meter to identify the most accurate calibration intervals.
