The course raises the awareness of the role of Human Factors in safety and performance and raises the bar in the use of this leadership competence in maritime companies and organizations. This is done by providing new knowledge about concepts such as drift into failure, resilient organizations, the thinking process and effective communication.

Goals and objectives

The course raises the awareness of the role of Human Factors in safety and performance and raises the bar in the use of this leadership competence in maritime companies and organizations. This is done by providing new knowledge about concepts such as drift into failure, resilient organizations, the thinking process and effective communication.

Course description

Today, Human Factors focuses not so much on the individual and the psychological resources and limitations of each person, but rather on team working in safety-critical domains as well as across the entire organization and its operating environment (SEPTIGON model).

In a resource-constrained world, successful and dynamic organizations will take small steps to make productivity gains. But by doing so, they might reduce their safety margins. It is, therefore, important to have team members who are capable of questioning measures and procedures.

The training program will provide the participants with further knowledge on why humans react in the way they do when facing demanding situations and how to exploit this knowledge to better enhance human response in critical areas such as communications, team working, stress management and decision making while leading.

Gains

Human Factors knowledge builds on the strengths and weaknesses of humans to ensure that individuals are not exposed beyond their abilities, a situation which could have disastrous consequences in safety-critical domains. Human Factors is, therefore, of great importance to safety, efficiency and performance capabilities, and consequently Human Factors knowledge is an essential component of leadership. By acquiring the latest tools in Human Factors knowledge, participants will be better equipped to achieve goals and minimize undesired consequences.

After the course the participants will be able to:

  • Know their own strengths and weaknesses better
  • Use the most advanced techniques within Human Factors to enhance team and individual performance
  • Understand human responses better
  • Ensure effective communication in stressful situations
  • Use practical tools to exploit team members’ abilities to their maximum
  • Better understand errors and how to prevent or minimize their consequences
