Understanding structural behaviour and response
When designing structures, a variety of important aspects are considered. One of the most important aspects is making sure that the structure is capable of withstanding the loads and potential hazards to which it is exposed.
We have provided fire and explosion studies since the early nineties, securing that clients meet government safety and protection requirements. We verify according to governmental requirements, but also according to client demands.
Effects from potential fires and gas explosions on corresponding structures are calculated and analysed. Based on this, we are able to optimise the amount of passive fire protection (PFP). Consequently, our clients may reduce the amount of PFP, leading to lower cost and lower topside weight. These analyses may also serve as input to a risk analysis, documenting the safety of the installation.
Integrated assessment of fire and structural response
Structural response due to fire actions is assessed by applying heat flow, based on radiation, convection and conduction to the system. As temperatures change, the material properties are likely to be degraded.
We analyse both thermal and structural responses. The purpose of a thermal analysis is to calculate the time dependent temperature distribution on the structural members due to fire loads on the structure. The effects of the fire loads are studied, and the temperature distributions from the thermal analyses are used as input together with permanent and live loads. Permanent and live loads are applied first, followed by thermal loads that are applied sequentially as temperature increments.
These assessments determine the need for corrective actions such as passive fire protection or any other modifications necessary.
Gas explosion assessment
The objective of assessing gas explosion loads is to meet the design specifications for the design and/or strengthening of main topside structures and blast restricting walls, and to establish input to risk analysis, documenting the safety of the installation.
We have extensive experience from various projects in the field, and we have expertise within all relevant areas. Assessment of gas explosion loads is used as a basis for weight optimisation of topside designs built to reduce gas explosion hazards.
