Evaluate and verify offshore structural behaviour with CFD analysis.

CFD analysis supports offshore teams in evaluating and verifying a structure's behaviour before production or when flow conditions around the structure change. In these situations, uncertainty about how the structure will behave can make it difficult to establish a reliable basis for further evaluation. By replacing uncertainty with analysis-based insight, CFD analysis helps teams assess structural behaviour earlier in the process. The service is part of the expertise area Maritime and offshore engineering

Challenges

When structural behaviour must be evaluated before production or changed conditions, uncertainty can limit verification of how the structure behaves.

Wave impact loads are difficult to quantify during design

Wave slamming, green water, and under-deck impact can create highly localised loads that are difficult to predict. Uncertainty about these loads can make it difficult to evaluate whether the structure will behave as expected.

Tank sloshing creates uncertain structural loading

Fluid motion inside partially filled tanks can generate rapidly changing impact loads and pressure distributions. Without insight into slosh dynamics, it becomes difficult to assess how surrounding structures respond under realistic operating conditions.

Physical testing can become extensive and costly

Offshore flow conditions, such as non-linear wave forces and wave run-up, are often difficult or impractical to reproduce experimentally at a representative scale. As a result, development and verification activities can require extensive physical testing, increasing both project cost and evaluation time.

Benefits

Get analysis-based results that support evaluation and verification of structural behaviour.

Evaluate offshore loading under realistic conditions

CFD analysis provides insight into wave impact, slamming and flow behaviour under operating conditions that are difficult to reproduce experimentally.

Reduce dependence on large-scale physical testing

By analysing demanding offshore flow scenarios, CFD analysis can reduce the number of physical experiments needed during development and verification activities.

Examine demanding offshore conditions

The analysis can be used to examine demanding offshore conditions where behaviour is difficult to test physically.
