Facility specifications

Provide tensile, fatigue, fracture and impact testing across load capacities from 5 kN to 2000 kN, frequencies up to 350 Hz and temperatures from –196 °C to elevated conditions, generating documented mechanical data for technical evaluation and documentation.

Tensile testing equipment

Universal uniaxial testing machines are used for tensile testing at ambient and elevated temperatures. Equipment capacities include 100 kN, 400 kN, 500 kN and 2000 kN hydraulic machines. Measured parameters include tensile strength (Rm), yield strength (Re), proof strength (e.g. Rp(X)), elongation, reduction of area (Z) and full stress-strain curves.

Fatigue testing equipment

Low- and high-frequency machines are used to simulate cyclic stresses. The equipment range includes load capacities from 5 kN to 600 kN and frequencies up to approximately 350 Hz for high-frequency testing.

Fracture mechanics test rigs

Dedicated test rigs are used to evaluate resistance to crack initiation and crack growth under stress. Test types include Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD), plane strain fracture toughness (K1C/KIC), J-integral fracture toughness testing (J1C/JIC) and fatigue crack growth (FCG) analysis.

Impact testing specifications

Charpy-V notch testing equipment has a capacity of up to 406 J and operates over a temperature range of –196 °C to +20 °C. Both standard and sub-size specimens are accepted.

Hydraulic systems for joint testing

Extensive hydraulic systems with capacities up to 2000 kN are used for weld, joint and large-structure integrity assessments.

In-house machining capabilities

The facility includes an in-house machine shop for specimen preparation. Capabilities include CNC machining, turning, cutting and sawing, tailored to mechanical test preparation.

Tensile testing configuration

Low- and high-frequency machines simulate cyclic stresses experienced in service conditions. Capabilities include constant-amplitude fatigue testing, S-N (Wöhler) curve generation, the staircase method, and custom fatigue programmes for specific load profiles and environments. Applications include lifecycle validation for rotating parts, welded joints and structural elements.

Fracture mechanics testing configuration

Dedicated test rigs are used to evaluate resistance to crack initiation and growth under stress. Post-test analysis may include SEM fractography as an optional activity for detailed microstructural and fracture surface examination. Applications include safety-critical components in offshore, aerospace, pressure systems and welded structures.

Impact testing configuration

Charpy-V notch testing determines material toughness under sudden loading and temperature conditions. Applications include ductile-to-brittle transition assessment, low-temperature fracture resistance and validation of materials for arctic, subsea and cryogenic use.

Weld, brazing and joint testing configuration

Mechanical integrity testing of joints is performed for structural reliability and code compliance. The test scope includes Weld Procedure Qualification Records (WPQR), brazed and rolled joints, and tensile, bend, impact, and fracture testing of joint assemblies. Tested materials include steels, stainless steels, aluminium, exotic alloys and non-ferrous metals. Applications include pipeline fabrication, pressure vessels, structural frames and offshore structures.
