How can we agree on how much something smells? Gain a shared understanding of odour with the odourmeter.

Odour is often a subjective assessment; cookies and pizzas can both smell pleasant or unpleasant, depending on how much you are exposed to the odour. However, few people disagree that a pigsty smells bad, as it can almost sting your nose. But how do you measure and categorise odour based on objective criteria?

What is the odourmeter?

Force Technology has developed a so-called odourmeter to provide, for example, municipalities and consultants with a common language and a shared understanding of how strong an odour is. The odourmeter visualises when something smells strongly and when something smells faintly, and can thus be used in dialogues in situations where odour has an impact on the surroundings.

How the odourmeter scale works

The odourmeter scale is divided according to the technical term OU/m3, which stands for odour units per cubic metre. This is the definition used to measure or calculate odour. Here, the aforementioned pigsty tops the scale, serving as a basis for comparing how much something smells.
