Painting on hot-dip galvanised steel
Painting hot-dip galvanised (galvanized) steel is a very good idea. It combines the excellent corrosion protection properties of zinc and provides the steel with an attractive, coloured finish. The combination of zinc coating and paint gives the best from both products and ensures the items have a long service life.
Nevertheless, things sometimes go quite wrong: After 6–12 months of exposure to the weather, the paint coating starts to flake off in large pieces. If you use a spatula or knife, you can peel off the entire layer of paint down to the zinc coating. A success has turned into an economic and aesthetic nightmare.
What happened – and how can it be avoided?
To shed light on the phenomenon, one must first look at the zinc coating itself. Then the pretreatment of the zinc layer before painting, and the subsequent painting process, must be assessed.
