Traffic noise is the worst source of noise in our society

Noise is one of the most important environmental problems, and noise from traffic is by far the worst source of noise in our society. In many places in Denmark, people’s homes and nearby outdoor areas are heavily affected by noise and emissions from traffic.

Traffic noise affects our health and quality of life negatively to an extent that we do not yet fully know. But new studies and research all point in the same direction – it is something we must take seriously.

1.3 million people are negatively affected by traffic noise in Denmark

In Denmark, more than 1.3 million people are affected by traffic noise that exceeds the Danish Environmental Protection Agency’s indicative limit value. At European level, it is estimated that almost 120 million people are affected by traffic noise. WHO has therefore identified traffic noise as the second biggest environmental problem for people’s health in the EU – surpassed only by air pollution.

The white paper addresses the problem and documents the latest knowledge on traffic noise

Action requires knowledge of challenges and opportunities. The latest knowledge and research results are included in a new white paper on traffic noise, which is a thorough revision of the white paper from 2016. The purpose of renewing the white paper is to address the extent of the problem through new knowledge and to focus on the opportunities that we as a society have to create better sound environments.
