Overall, this may contribute to extending the product’s period of use and service life, which may both reduce the electronics industry’s resource consumption and the subsequent amount of electronic waste. If you are considering expanding or newly developing a product with functionality for over-the-air firmware updating, there are a number of practical considerations that are worth incorporating as early in the process as possible. There is a vast range of different OTA solutions, but what do they consist of, and which ones fit the product?

This guide introduces practical concepts and methods for OTA firmware updating together with a number of considerations, in the form of rules of thumb, that can be used to assess an OTA solution.
