Increase safety and reduce the risk of downtime through strategic well integrity management. We hold extensive experience within structural design and collecting and evaluating data concerning well integrity management.

Well integrity management is an industry challenge worldwide. Harsh conditions and extended service life increases the importance of maintaining safe and reliable well operation. In order to optimise the lifetime of wells, we utilise a comprehensive approach, entailing strategic evaluations based on numerous practical and theoretical inputs.

Through a combination of structural monitoring, corrosion management and fatigue assessments, we can improve well integrity decision making, leading to more control and thereby safer well operation.

We operate within the following:

  • Structural integrity
  • Structural monitoring
  • Corrosion management
  • Inspection (NDT)

We provide services from early well design, through drilling and work over operations to production, supporting the life cycle of the wells.

Well structural integrity

Our structural well integrity services span from design analysis (modelling, simulation and capacity assessment) to structural monitoring with subsequent post-processing of measured data. The services are connected to risers, Xmas trees, wellheads, conductors and casings (down to ~30m below mudline).

Design, verification and re-assessment

Drilling and production systems are often built up of standard components from various suppliers. During the whole system design phase or as a final verification, global nonlinear simulation models are created in order to analyse the system response and to assess the individual components structural capacity.

Re-assessment of system may be required if operational conditions, parameters and/or properties applied in the design phase are changed when the system is installed and put into production.

The deliveries from the work includes structural capacity utilisation for the individual components as well as optionally recommendations for structural improvements (improved structural robustness/reduced utilisation).

Structural monitoring

Monitoring systems are made up from a set of sensors, typically accelerometers, inclinometers, strain gauges and displacement sensors, with wired or wireless communication to a computer on the rig for storage, control, processing and visualisation.

Monitoring equipment is applied in cases where:

  • The design capacities are limited
  • The system or component response is difficult to predict by simulations
  • The measurements are, directly or indirectly, used to set operational parameters
  • There is a need to monitor fatigue damage due to limited service life

Data and information may also be made available onshore or at other locations on the vessel, and it is essential that sampling of all sensors at sufficient frequencies to reproduce the loads is synchronous.

The monitored responses are either delivered to the client as-is (filtered and quality assured) or they are post-processed where derived quantities are supplied to the client.

Post-processing of monitored response

The post-processing activities transforms core monitored responses data to high level information directly applicable in decision making processes by using actual structural behaviour rather than responses predicted from simulation tools.

Corrosion management for wells

FORCE Technology Norway has developed corrosion models over time and is responsible for well corrosion management on several oil fields in the North Sea.

In order to collect, treat, visualise and distribute important corrosion information, we developed CMIS-wells (Corrosion Management Information System for wells), which is a web-based data management system designed to share inspection results, laboratory analysis, monitoring results and corrosion data with all relevant personnel. It provides an efficient flow of information.

CMIS-wells includes functionalities such as:

  • E-mail notification whenever a report has been uploaded, or if an action has been assigned
  • System status as traffic light colours for easy status review and interpretation
  • Corrosion forecasts to support remedial actions (e.g. inspection/monitoring adjustments)
